Assignment IIA

Loi Krathong 

Loi Krathong is celebrated on one night during full moon of the 12th lunar month. ‘Loy’ signifies ‘floating’, while ‘krathong’ is a small object in the shape of a lotis flower, usually made from banana leaves. On the evening of the festival, thousands of people head to their local river or canal to make a wish. They do so by lighting the candle in their krathong and setting it free to float with the current. Truly beautiful.

October–December 2010: Flooding in multiple regions resulted in 80 deaths in Southern Thailand and 180 deaths in upper parts of the country. Damages were estimated at up to 54 billion baht.26 

December 2004: The Indian Ocean tsunami hit the west coast of Southern Thailand, resulting in 4,812 confirmed deaths, 8,458 injuries, and 4,499 missing in Thailand.

23 May 2006: Heavy rainfall caused flash flooding and landslides in UttaraditSukhothai, Phrae, Lampang and Nan Provinces, resulting in 87 deaths.

2 October 2006: Remnants of Typhoon Xangsane passed over Thailand, killing 47 and damaging 1.3 million rai (2,100 square kilometres (810 sq mi) of farmland and local infrastructure.

How crime could have been prevented

  1. Work with public agencies and other organizations -- neighborhood-based or community-wide -- on solving common problems.
  2. Make sure that all the youth in the neighborhood have positive ways to spend their spare time, through organized recreation, tutoring programs, part-time work, and volunteer opportunities.
  3. Report a crime if you witness it or something you suspect might be a crime. Agree to testify if needed.
  4. Protect domestic violence victims (and their children) through policies as well as laws that offer them prompt and meaningful response to calls for help and appropriate legal recourse.
  5. Speak up in support of funding and effective implementation of programs and other resources that help schools develop an effective set of violence prevention strategies.

E : I was cycling on Old road.
P : Can you describe what happened ?
E : The black Ford car was at the junction, and just as it pulled out, the grey Ibiza came out of nowhere very fast and they ran into each other.
P : I see. So you would say the second vehicle was travelling at high speed?
E : Of course!! at least 60 miles per hour.
